Trackback auto-discovery

So, for whatever reason, WordPress doesn't support the industry standard RDF for trackback auto-discovery. Instead, it uses a special link tag (which it can get away with because WordPress permalinks must be on individual pages -- WordPress can't use weekly archives as post permalinks). Anyhow, all grumbling aside, Powerblogs now supports this method of trackback auto-discovery.

I noticed that you have also begun picking up some, but not all, Haloscan trackbacks. Was that just coincidence? Or have you been working on it?

Also, have you considered showing trackback success when they are added after a post has been made? And do you have a mechanism in place to ensure that, if we manually trackback to a Haloscan user and the system picked it up automatically, we don't get double trackbacks?

No, I haven't been working on haloscan trackbacks; I think that some people have come up with a way for haloscan trackbacks to support the RDF auto-discovery code (which is the industry standard), but that not all people using haloscan trackbacks do that. Trackback auto-discovery relies on the author of the post being tracked back to providing some code to enable auto-discovery; many haloscan users just don't do that.

As to trackback successes, that should happen now. On the post publishing page, in the ping section, if a trackback was issued successfully there will be a notice of it. This sometimes takes a while, though, since the software has to fetch the linked page, look for trackback information, and then send a trackback.

And yes, all successful trackbacks are logged and the code first checks the log before attempting to send another trackback, manual or automatic, so duplicate trackbacks should never be sent.

Thanks,
-Chris
